Today in our week long celebration of some of the extraordinary women leaders we have working at Cape Group, we focus on Reisa Schwartzman, our company President.

How long have you been in the construction/development industry and why did you choose it as your career?

I grew up in the industry, so I feel like the answer is all my life.  But officially, I started in property management and development in 1985.  With construction always being a focus in the company. This industry picked me by my birth right, however I have always been excited to walk a construction site and love being a part of the creative process of finding the right project for the right site.

What has been the most significant barrier in your career?

In development, breaking the barrier into a male dominated industry, can be difficult. I am in a position in our company that is usually held my men, but that doesn’t mean you are treated the same. I have yet to be invited to a golf tournament with other Presidents of Development or Construction companies.

What advice would you give to women trying to break into this industry?

Be assertive and stand up for who and what you are.  Your confidence will break down the barriers.

What are some strategies that can help women achieve a more prominent role in their organization?

Be educated and get experience so you can share your knowledge.  The more you know makes you more valuable and companies will need your services.
